Women's Issues

While a panoply of women's issues run throughout my work, these paintings deal specifically with women.

Woe-Man

1200

2009

36" x 36"

Inspired by a fresco in Florence's San Lorenzo, I'm always fascinated with the dichotomy between women personifying ideals  such as Justice, Faith and Charity and the actual treatment of average human women.

An Abbreviated History of White Women

1,800

2000

42" x 44"

Partly exploring  virgin/whore stereotypes, God making womenkind suffer the pains of childbirth forever because of Eve's transgression with that apple, the other main visual symbol here is from a boar who grows his protective and combative tusks so long that they eventually impale and kill him.

Thoughts on Marriage

600

1996

26-7/8" x 20"

Exploring advantages and disadvantages of marriage for a woman and how it does or doesn't support her in old age.

Stellar Guidepost

700

1998

29-3/4" x 23-1/2"

Oil on paper

Contemplation on a woman in a situation of domestic violence or other abuse, the body folds itself inward for protection. The birdlike form above the figure is a Micronesian navigation chart. In this way of navigation waves are depicted moving around a still boat.

The Mind Spews Chains

1800

2009

48" x 36"

We are bound to this earth by our thoughts, our ego. Can we overcome this to live full spiritual lives?

Larger Than Life

1200

2013

40" x 30"

An indication of our spiritual selves beyond our earthly selves. What it means to be a spiritual being in a physical body- the stress and beauty it creates.

The Garden

1400

1994

44-3/4" x 30-3/8"

This painting touches on issues of women's labor, culture clashes and values in all dimensions.

Untitled (Doll Factory Indonesia)

800

1994

37-3/8" x 25-1/4"

A painting highlighting women's labor, cultural values and relative worth.
